Whether you’re traveling by car, train, boat, or plane, be sure to consult your veterinarian prior to taking a trip with your pet. Be sure to tell your pet how long you’ll be gone, the method of travel, and any regulations from the travel company (airline, train or bus company) or of your destination. Here are just a few of the things that your veterinarian may be able to help you with to assist your pet’s travels!
- Obtain extra doses of your pet’s regular medications to tie you over until you return home: If your pet is on daily medication (whether it be insulin, anti-seizure drugs, or just a vitamin supplement) and your trip is running during the week you would need to be getting a refill, talk to your veterinarian about getting some extra doses to tie you over until you and your furry friend return home.
- Discuss travel anxiety: Many pets can become restless during long car rides or fearful on trains and planes. Consult with your veterinarian to figure out how to help your pet beat the stress. Your veterinarian may provide calming supplements (such as VetriScience Composure Chews), a Thundershirt, or even sedatives to help your pet get through the trip safely.
- Ask about motion sickness: If your pet seems woozy and/or vomits after long car rides, you can ask your veterinarian about a product called Cerenia. Cerenia is a tablet (or can be given via injection by your veterinarian) that treats nausea in cats and dogs. It may be worth bringing up even if your pet has not experienced motion sickness in the car but you are traveling by a new method to your pet (such as boat, train, or airplane).
- Any unconventional tips: Your veterinarian is sure to know a wide range of helpful tips for your pet (like offering ice cubes rather full, ready-to-spill bowls of water) that will make the whole trip easier for both of you.
