It's a good time to review with your children how to "be a tree" if a strange dog approaches and to never try to pet a dog without asking the owner first. Dogs that are chained up, eating, in a car, or protecting their owner, their yard, a litter of puppies or even their favorite toy are more likely to bite. Put yourself in their paws; you might consider biting a tall stranger who runs up to you and then pats you on the head.
